The Beauty of Diamonds
Diamond is the birthstone for April and the Zodiac gemstone for Capricorn. They are also recommended for couples celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Diamonds has remarkable properties and because of this, since first discovered it has been used symbolically in many cultures and throughtout history. Diamonds have been thought to symbolise power and strength and it was claimed that diamonds give victory to he or she who carries it bound on his left arm, no matter the number of enemies. Diamonds have been believed to be the tears of God, splinters of fallen stars and it has also been thought that they would change colour in the face of guilt or in the presence of poison.
Since the 15th century diamond has also been used to symbolise love and romance and they were used at times in engagement rings. It only since the early to mid 20th century, due to an advertising campaign by the De Beers company, that the use of white diamonds in engagement rings became popular and widespread.
Diamond is the hardest known natural substance and is safe to use in jewellery dips and ultra-sonic cleaners. Although diamond is very durable it lacks toughness in some stones due to a factor called cleavage. This means that if a diamond receives a hard blow in the wrong direction it may split.
Avoid high heat; coat stones if for example, using a jewelers torch. High heat may give diamonds a white ‘frosting’. And avoid Sharp knocks.
